Getting down to Dub-Reggae with Gran'mah Band

Gran'mah band

Inspired by different artists from different eras, like Fela Kuti, 340ml, Mingas, Miriam Makeba, and Freshly Ground, Gran’Mah brings a fusion style of music and positive vibes to their fresh approach to making reggae music. They mix their reggae sound with dub, ska, hip hop, drum & bass and other genres.

How would you describe the style of your music?

Our style of music is a fusion of our influences as individuals, merged together to make this dope dub/reggae pop that is our music.

How did Gran’mah band come together?

We came together in 2009, it started out as a fun project between friends at the bass player's grandmother garage and then with time we decided that we wanted to follow this passion and do the most we can with it, so we searched for a vocalist to match the band's style and after many tries, we found Regina in 2012 and Marques (Keyboard) as well.

What is everyone’s role/position in the band?

Regina dos Santos (Lead Singer), Migz Wilson (Drummer and back vocals), Luy Silva (Guitar and back vocals), Leo Fernandes (Bass), Miguel Marques (Keyboards)

Where do you get your inspiration for your music?

It mostly comes from the heart, we try to jam as much as possible doing our rehearsals and because of that, we tend to come up with new ideas, sometimes it starts with a little riff, others with a nice beat, afterwards we take on that and complete a song. As for the lyrics, it's mostly about whatever Regina is feeling like at a particular moment in her life, or a story she has lived and would like to sing about.

Have you been nominated or won any awards for your music?

We have been nominated 3 times for the Mozambique Music Awards and won for Best Alternative Song with I Got 2 Move, we also won a public contest to open the MMA Ceremony.

What advice can you provide other young people trying to pursue their dreams?

It's not an easy road, but nothing beats doing what you love, so keep on going and be the master of your own faith.

In the coming months Gran'mah band will be performing at Azgo Festival in Mozambique and Zakifo in South Africa. Follow Gran'mah band on Instagram and Facebook. Stay tuned for tour dates!
