We'd like to introduce you to the ToweRing Goddess

July 11, 2015

Known as the “ToweRing Goddess,” RuTendo DeNise is a woman of many talents. She models, writes musical couplets, while also running PR across Zimbabwe.

Since her teens, she has been determined to model her shape, her way. As head of PR for Zimbabwe Fashion Week, RuTendo made her runway debut in 2014, closing for Thembani Mubochwa, the head designer for TZM Fashion House.

In addition to modelling, she writes rhyming couplets to compose hit sounds like Cheukwa and Umzebedu:

  • "Cheukwa is Shona which loosely means to be looked at and admired. The track is a poem in celebration of the different qualities that make the Zimbabwean woman beautiful regardless of race, orientation, belief system or political affiliation."
  • "Umzebedu stems from common game we used to play as children in Zimbabwe. I remixed the song and word to give it a new meaning. That is to simply chill, dance, enjoy and cherish the simple things in life. Life is about creating memories that is the influence and underlying message behind Umzebedu."

Her writing process involves picking “a word, think it through and just write. When the thought process is over, I stop.” When writing, she is inspired by people, shared experiences, nature, conversations, and suppressed emotion.

The African continent and it’s people are amazing. One of her favourite places is Lusaka, Zambia. She describes it as “very homely” and says “there’s something about Lusaka and her people I fell in love with within my first five minutes of being there.” One place she dreams of visiting is Nigeria, as she huge fan of Fela Kuti and loves the work of actress Patience Ozokwor. RuTendo is intrigued by Nigeria's people who are “incredibly savvy entrepreneurially, so there are a lot of lessons to learn from the different models of business in Nigeria.”

RuTendo is a recipient of the Zimbabwe the Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Zimbabwe and is listed as one of the 30 Young Zimbabweans under 30 to watch in 2012. When asked about her hopes and dreams for her future, RuTendo wants to produce music, as well as engage in PR business ventures in Brand Leadership and Fashion Design.
